![]() Brachypelma smithii Name: Aburame Shino Age: 14 Birthday: January 23, 1992 Family: Father, mother, little sister, pet tarantula. Status: Freshman at Oshima High Blood Type: AB Favorite Books: The Insect Societies, by Edward O. Wilson. The Ants, by Edward O. Wilson and Bert Hölldobler. Anything his parents published. Favorite Food: Vegetable salad. Aspirations: To become an entomologist. To illustrate textbooks and lab manuals. To publish an extensive text on all creatures segmented and crawly. Hobbies: Observing, sketching, and learning about said segmented, crawly creatures. History: Aburame Shino's life has been dominated by creepy crawlies ever since he was born in the middle of a rainforest (his entomologist parents were collecting insects, arachnids, annelids, and so on for a zoo in Australia, as well as searching for medicinal compounds to be used in their research). The day after she gave birth, Aburame Chinatsu stayed to nurse baby Shino inside a mosquito net with only her pet tarantula for company, as her husband, Shibi, had left to acquire supplies from the nearby village in order to continue their work. With parents like those, Shino's love for small, multi-legged buzzing things may very well have been inevitable. His aunts and uncles from both sides of the family were no help either; all but one (an exterminator; the family does not talk about him) were in insect or research-related professions, and bombarded him early on with books, plush spiders, and ant farms. By the time he was eight, Shino could speak three languages (from traveling around so often with his parents), recite all the orders within Insecta, and tell his American schoolteachers that no, scorpions were not "bugs," they were arachnids, although both classes fell within the phylum Arthropoda... At age nine, Shino began to seriously study and sketch insects. He had always been drawing them – with crayon, pencil, and pen – but one morning, while observing a fire ant crawl up a twig, while squinting at a yellow wasp staring quizzically back, he was struck by how alien they were – how wonderful their jagged pincers, filmy wings, and faceted eyes. He started poring over textbooks like never before, trying to replicate every insect he saw. His parents were fond of his new passion and encouraged it with art supplies, until Shino decided that depicting insects precisely and accurately was the most difficult thing to do, and settled on honing that skill with technical pencil. His parents watched his progress with muted pride. When Shino entered his last year of middle school, though, his mother noticed something a little odd. Her boy was always studying, reading, helping his younger sister Tora out with her schoolwork, and being all-around everything a mother could ever wish for - but not once had he ever asked to go to a friend’s house. Come to think of it, she’d never seen him bring any friends over either. When asked, Shino told her very plainly that he had no friends at school, which, of course, troubled his mother greatly. She too had been a very quiet child, but she, at least, had had one very close female friend. Shino had no one but his family and his pets. Convinced that jumping around from country to country for their research was taking its toll on her two children, Chinatsu persuaded Shibi to let the family settle in the mainland near Oshima Island, at least until Tora finished high school, so that she and Shino could make friends and spend time with people their own age. Shibi was skeptical, but acquiesced when his daughter admitted that she didn’t like the moving around. Shino, on the other hand, hadn’t minded the traveling at all – he’d never liked talking to people anyway – but staying where he was meant that he would be able to go to Oshima, the art and athletics high school he’d heard so much about, and sharpen his technical drawing skills. After having a serious discussion about his choice, Shino’s parents allowed him to attend the school, knowing that he would pursue a career in science regardless. Serious, silent, humorless, and with social skills nonexistent, Shino prefers to spend his leisure time studying the various tiny arthropods in his parents' lab, reading quietly with Tora (currently attending middle school), and playing with the gentle tarantula (Grammostola aureostriata) his mother gave him on his tenth birthday. A very private person, he has befriended only a handful of bipeds, and prefers to wear sunglasses and clothes that keep his face hidden when not in school, and keeps to himself when he is. Occasionally, he disappears from class to accompany his father or mother on their now-rare research expeditions (both work in the biology department of the local university), but he always hands his homework in completed when he returns. Not that anyone really notices when he's missing in the first place... |
